Matter is looking for a world-class Senior Interaction Designer with deep understanding of service design, to become a member of our stellar digital design team. The senior interaction designer will be primarily responsible for user experience in the products and services we design for start-ups, SMBs, and fortune 500 companies.

In addition to a complete ownership of the interaction design craft, the role requires complete comfort with an extremely collaborative design process and a proven ability to lead design teams throughout all phases of a project execution. Great client-facing, communication, and presentation skills are absolutely essential to success for this position.

The Senior Interaction Designer at Matter will also support business development by helping plan, program and write proposals for clients.

The Senior Interaction Designer role at Matter covers the following detailed responsibilities:
- Collaborate with a team of designers and/or client representatives in defining a project requirements and design objectives, and in creating the vision for the project execution;
- Collaborate in the planning, execution, and synthesis of design research programs, from qualitative ethnography to competitive and trend surveys;
- As hands-on individual contributor, design, illustrate and present interaction models, information architectures, navigation models, UI mechanics, end-to-end user task flows, wireframes, animations and transitions, and others, targeting a variety of technology platforms and using a variety of approaches and artifacts, including sketches, diagrams, physical mock-ups, prototypes and others;
- Lead dedicated creative workshops with the participation of designers, client representatives, and users, following structured ideation and brainstorming methodologies;
- As a project lead, direct mixed teams of interaction designers, visual designers, motion designers, industrial designers and design technologists, in the daily execution of all phases of a project, guaranteeing the consistency of the team’s work with the project design vision;
- Lead and contribute to the design and development of design language systems, including interaction, visuals and motion;
- Lead and contribute to the creation and maintenance of design documentation, including style guides, UI toolkits and other design documents;
- Mentor and direct junior designers in the delivery of high-quality design in a timely manner;
- Present proposals, research findings, early concepts, detailed designs, and others, to diverse audiences and roles, including fortune 500 company executives, VCs, academics, and others;
- Share with a Project Manager the responsibility for executing on a project, ensuring the timely delivery of design artifacts to clients;
- With the project Creative Director, ensure the high quality of client deliverables in a realized service or product design;
- Participate to Business Development activities by contributing to proposal definition, composition and presentation.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the utmost level of quality in the consistent delivery of the following skills:
- Total ownership and mastery of the interaction design techniques, methodologies and approaches, including personae and scenarios, experience maps, interaction models, UI mechanics information architectures, navigation models, task-flows, wireframes, and others, and with a variety of approaches to illustrate them, including but not limited to sketches, diagrams, physical mock-ups, and others;
- Ownership of interaction design approaches and methods for services and products involving multiple platforms, such as for instance mobile and web;
- In-depth understanding of visual design and motion design;
- In-depth knowledge of the design impact of different product/service physical form factors, appearance and affordances, sensors and interaction modes (touch, voice, gestures, etc.), screens and display technologies (resolutions, pixel densities, aspect ratios. etc.), for popular personal devices and IoT platforms;
- Proven experience in leading mixed design teams of visual designers, interaction designers, motion designers, and design technologists, in the day-to-day execution of the design of digital products or services, from early architecture to final touches;
- Understanding of software development, its process, and prevailing platforms including embedded;
- Understanding of product positioning and technical requirements, and ability of translating this understanding in actionable design directions;
- Understanding of qualitative and quantitative design and marketing research findings and techniques;
- Ability to oversee the creation of clear and detailed design documents intended for an audience of engineers and software developers with no design background;
- Ability to contribute to the creation of future and current product concepts presentations, interactive demonstrations, and video scenarios;
- Proficiency with Adobe CC, Sketch or equivalent, MS PowerPoint or Apple Keynote;
- Familiarity with HTML, CSS and JavaScript and with at least one EE prototyping platform such as Arduino or similar;
- Knowledge of MS Office, QuickTime, Adobe Premiere and After Effect;
- Strong time management skills and ability to be self-directed when needed.

Requirements
- Minimum 3-5 years’ experience with a major web, product development or consulting firm in the digital product and/or service space;
- A portfolio demonstrating experience with at least 2 modes of interaction chosen amongst touch, voice, or gestures;
- A Bachelor of Arts majoring in design, HCI, or related discipline;
- International candidates must hold a valid US Work Visa to be considered.

While not required, candidates with the following skills will be preferred:
- Familiarity with agile software development methodologies and process;
- Familiarity with industrial design and physical interactions is considered a plus.

As individual contributor to a project team, the interaction designer will be responsible for the design of user experiences in the products and services Matter develops for start-ups, SMBs, and fortune 500 companies.

The role requires complete ownership of all aspects of the interaction design craft, from research and early ideation, to detailed design and documentation. The interaction designer will be part of an extremely collaborative process, involving clients and users in the design and development of new products and services. For this reason, total openness to collaboration and great communication skills are an absolute requirement for the job.

The Interaction Designer role at Matter covers the following responsibilities:
- Work in close collaboration with a team of designers, product managers,
prototypers throughout all phases of execution of a project;
- Assist with the planning and execution of design research, from ethnography to competitive surveys and others;
- In collaboration with a Matter team and/or client representatives, contribute to the definition of project requirements, objectives, and vision;
- Participate in the ideation of new products and services, and illustrate them using a variety of artifacts, including rich, interactive demonstrations;
- Design interaction and navigation models, information architectures, end-to-end user task flows, screens, animations and transitions, and others, targeting a variety of platforms as well as interaction modes (touch, voice, gesture, etc);
- Refine the design of specific product or service experiences according to client feedbacks and/or test findings;
- Contribute to the design and development of design language systems, with particular regard to the interaction design language;
- Create detailed interaction design documents to be consumed by software developers;
- Present ideas and solutions internally to fellow team members and Matter senior designers, and defend proposed designs in a review or critique setting;
- Ensure the highest possible level of quality in the on-time execution and delivery of assigned user experience design artifacts.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the utmost level of quality in the consistent delivery of the following skills:
- Proficiency with interaction design techniques and methodologies, including but not limited to user personae and scenarios, experience maps, interaction models, UI mechanics, information architectures, navigation models, task-flows,
wireframes, and others;
- Proficiency with a variety of approaches to illustrate UX designs, including but not limited to interactive sketches, diagrams, physical mock-ups, and others;
- In-depth understanding of visual and motion design;
- In-depth understanding of the unique benefits and constraints of a variety of interaction modes, from traditional on-screen, mouse-based interactions, to natural UI modes, such as voice, gestures and other sensor based modalities;
- In-depth understanding of the design impact of different product/service physical form factors, appearance and affordances, sensors and interaction modes (touch, voice, gestures, etc.), screen and display technologies (resolution, pixel density, aspect ratios. etc.);
- In-depth understanding of UX design approaches for product/service ecosystems that involve multiple platforms or channels, such as responsive design and others;
- Understanding of qualitative and quantitative design and marketing research approaches, findings and techniques;
- Understanding of product positioning and technical requirements;
- Basic understanding of software development and the major software development platforms for Internet, mobile and embedded computing;
- Experience with presenting and discussing designs with a team of designers;
- Experience in the creation of clear and detailed design documents intended for an audience of engineers and software developers with no design background;
- Experience in contributing to the creation of future and current product concepts presentations, interactive demonstrations, and video scenarios;
- Proficiency with Adobe CC, Sketch or equivalent, MS PowerPoint or Apple Keynote;
- Demonstrable working knowledge of a basic interaction design and prototyping platform, such as Balsamiq, Axure, or similar;
- Working knowledge of MS Office, QuickTime, Adobe Premiere and After Effect;
- Basic understanding of EE and IoT prototyping with at least one of today’s popular platforms such as Arduino, or Raspberry Pi, or similar;
- Strong self-management skills, in particular with regard to time management and deadlines, and ability to be self-directed when needed.

While not required, candidates with the following skills will be preferred:
- Experience working with Industrial Designers;
- Familiarity with prototyping in HTML/CSS/Javascript;
- Familiarity with IoT and EE prototyping on one of today’s popular platforms such as
Arduino, or Raspberry Pi, or similar;
- Familiarity with agile software development.

Requirements:
- Minimum 1-3 year experience with a major web, product development or consulting firm in the digital product and/or service design and development
space;
- A portfolio demonstrating experience with at least 1 mode of natural interaction chosen amongst touch, voice, or gestures;
- A Bachelor of Arts majoring in design (industrial, graphic, UX), HCI, or related discipline;
- International candidates must hold a valid US Work Visa to be considered.
